Measure mobile app usage
As you start using the ThoughtFarmer mobile app, you may want to track intranet usage via the app to see how the mobile app is being adopted, or to compare intranet traffic from the web with traffic from the mobile app.
How it works
Platform dimension for mobile app
TF Analytics now has a new dimension under Visitors > Platform that shows visits, actions, actions per visit, average time on page, average time on website, bounces, and bounce rate specific to the mobile app only. This report provides overall usage of the mobile app from all your users. It is the first report to look at if you just want some high level stats. The report also breaks down traffic by app version (the number after "ThoughtFarmerMobile"), so you can see if your users are keeping up with the latest release.
Add a custom segment
You can add a custom segment (essentially a filter) that uses the new Platform dimension. Add a custom segment once, and then subsequently apply the custom segment to all other existing views and reports to understand where your mobile traffic is coming from.
Adding a custom segment:
- Click on the All visits dropdown menu, click Add New Segment.
- Enter a Name for the segment. Example: "Mobile app".
- Select Visitors > Platform for the criteria field (It will say "Actions In Visit").
- Select Contains for the operator (It will say "Is").
- Enter ThoughtFarmerMobile for the field value. (This will include all versions of the mobile app in the segment.)
- Click Test to see some test results.
- Click Save & Apply to save the segment.
Example 1: Apply the custom segment to the TF Page Titles report
Open the ThoughtFarmer > Page Titles report, then select the Mobile App segment from the segment dropdown at the top to see all the results filtered to mobile app traffic only. This report helps determine if certain pages or content are highly consumed on the mobile app (eg. photo gallery, FAQ's, policies etc.) while other pages are not (eg. lengthy and complex pdf documents).
Example 2: Apply the custom segment to the Locations report
Open the Visitors > Locations report, then select the Mobile App segment from the segment dropdown at the top to see where in the world the mobile app traffic originates from. This report gives you a glimpse into where your salespeople, service technicians, and other frontline workers are using the app from.
Example 3: Apply the custom segment to the Times report
Open the Visitors > Times report, select the Mobile App segment from the segment dropdown at the top to see when mobile app traffic is the highest or lowest. This report can tell you whether your employees are using the app during or after business hours, for example. Some customers have labour policies around working during off hours.
Example 4: Open Row Evolution to show native app activities over time
Select any report and select the Mobile App segment from the segment dropdown at the top. Hover over a specific data row of interest and click the Row evolution icon to open the Row Evolution window and see the activities using the mobile app over time.
This report can help you measure uptake. For example, after launching a mobile app campaign, you might want to know:
- How many people decided to download and try the app?
- Did that interest decrease over time?
- Is it time to send another reminder?
