Main navigation bar
What is the main navigation bar?
The main navigation bar is the toolbar that appears on every intranet page. There are two main navigation styles to choose between for your intranet theme: Compact (logo inline) navigation and Bar navigation. With compact navigation, links appear in the site header, to the right of the site logo. With bar navigation, links appear below the site header and logo, and above page content. To change the navigation style, see Navigation and header.
Compact navigation style
Bar navigation style
The main navigation bar does not show when viewing the intranet on smaller screens, such as on smartphones, or in some orientations on tablets. The instructions below explain how to control which links show in your intranet's main navigation bar. You can show or hide links to the homepage, users' profile pages, and all top level pages.
To customize the appearance of the main navigation bar, see the Navigation and header page.
Show/hide link to homepage in the main navigation bar
The homepage is accessible by clicking the home icon on the left of the App toolbar. A link to the homepage does not show in the main navigation bar by default, but you can choose to display it there. To display the homepage link:
- Click on the gear icon on the right of the main navigation bar.
- Click on Edit homepage in the menu that opens.
- At the top of the page, for the checkbox "Display in the top navigation bar":
- Check the checkbox to show the link to the homepage.
- Uncheck the checkbox to hide the link to the homepage.
- Click Save on the top right.
Show/hide users' profile pages in the main navigation bar
Users are always able to access their profiles by clicking on their profile photo or name on the right of the App toolbar, and clicking on their profile photo or name again in the menu that opens. You can also make users' profiles available from the main navigation bar via a personalized link (For example, "Camila's Profile"), but this is not enabled by default. To show the link:
- Click on the gear icon on the right of the main navigation bar.
- Click on Edit homepage in the menu that opens.
- Under the Homepage heading, for the checkbox "Show a link to the user's profile page in the top navigation":
- Check the checkbox to show the link to the user's profile page.
-
Uncheck the checkbox to hide the link to the user's profile page.
- Click Save on the top right.
Enable dropdown menus in the main navigation bar
Administrators can enable dropdown menus that list the child pages for pages listed in the main navigation bar. The dropdown menus open when a cursor hovers over a tab in the main navigation bar.
- Click on the gear icon on the right of the main navigation bar.
- Click on Edit homepage in the menu that opens.
- Under the Homepage heading, for the checkbox "Enable drop-down menus in the top navigation":
- Check the checkbox to enable dropdown menus.
- Uncheck the checkbox to disable dropdown menus.
- Click Save on the top right.
Show/hide top level pages in the main navigation bar
A top level page is a child page of the intranet homepage. When a top level page is created, by default the page shows as a link in the main navigation bar. If you have many top level pages, you may not want them all to appear on the main navigation bar.
When Compact navigation style is selected for the main navigation bar, if there are more top level pages than will fit on one line, a More link is created which expands to a dropdown menu with the additional top level pages.
When Bar navigation style is selected for the main navigation bar, if there are more top level pages than will fit on one line they will wrap to the next line, and can look cluttered (Bar navigation style is the legacy main navigation bar style, and so retains the previous behavior).
Both the More menu and navigation bar wrapping will appear sooner on smaller screens. However, the main navigation bar does not display on resolutions less than 750 pixels wide. Hiding some of the top level links can prevent the navigation from wrapping to the next line. If you hide a top level page from the main navigation bar, it is still accessible in the left hand navigation (aka. SuperNav, if you have chosen to display this feature on desktop).
To hide a top level page link:
- Go into edit mode on the top level page that you want to hide.
- Uncheck the box "Display in the top navigation bar" at the top of the page.
- Click Save.
You can also hide the default People, Groups and News pages from the SuperNav instead of the main navigation bar. To learn more see SuperNav settings.
Delete a top level link content type
If a Link content type has been added to the main navigation bar (i.e. a link to a page that is not a direct child page of the homepage), to remove it, you must delete it. To delete it, navigate to any page other than the homepage. In the SuperNav on the left, click the down arrow beside the homepage title to show the homepage's subpages. The content link in the main navigation bar will show as a subpage with a link icon to the left of the title. Click the edit icon on the right of the link to go into edit mode on the link content type. Click Delete link under the Save button and click Delete again to confirm that you want to delete the link.
