Create and insert an anchor link
An anchor link, also known as a jump link, allows you to link directly to a specific section of a page. Instead of having to scroll down a page to find information, the user clicks the hyperlink and “jumps” right to where you’re referencing.
Anchor links are ideal for adding inter-page navigation and referencing specific content on other intranet pages, improving usability on your intranet.
In-page linking must be enabled by an administrator - To learn more see Configure additional Rich Text Editor settings.
In order to make an in-page link, you first have to create a link target - in other words, you have to specify the place that you want the link to go to. Since you can make multiple in-page links on the same page, each link target must have a unique link target ID.
Step1: Create a link target ID
- In edit mode, highlight or place your cursor where you want a link to take a user to
- Click the icon that looks like a target and says ‘create a link target ID’ when you hover over it. The Create a link target ID pop-up window will appear.
- You’ll be prompted to create a unique ID for the target link (e.g. Heading2, or the name of the heading)
- Then click Create target
- A target symbol will appear on the left of the line where you created the target.
Tip: Make sure the target ID text is clear and descriptive, as it will be visible to intranet users in the link that you use.
Step 2: Inserting an anchor link
Once you’ve made your Link target ID, you’re now ready to create a link that will go to the target area on the page. There are two options for inserting an anchor link.
Option 1: Insert an in-page content link
To add the anchor link within the same page:
- Set your cursor or highlight the text you want to make into a link
- Click the Link icon in the Rich text editor
- Select More link options
- Click In-page content link from the right-hand menu (this will only show if you’ve successfully created your Link target ID in the steps above)
- From the dropdown menu, click the Target ID you want to insert
- Click the Insert button
From the In-page content link menu, you can also:
- Edit the Link Label. The Link Label box at the bottom of the link pop-up window contains the text that will display as the link. Click in the Link Label box and type new text if you want to add or change the link text.
- Edit where to Link to
- Change whether the link opens in a new tab
Option 2: Add an anchor link to a different page
To add an anchor link to a different page:
- Open the page you want to add the hyperlink to
- Click the Link icon in your rich text editor
- Paste the page link or Search for the page that has the content you want to anchor link to
- At the end of the link, add a hashtag followed by the Link Target ID
- For example, a Link Target ID of “vacationpolicy” on a benefits page would look like: happyintranet.creditunion.ca/benefits#vacationpolicy
- Click Apply
Don’t forget to always double (and triple check!) your links to ensure they are going to the right place and work as expected!
