Insert link to external website
How to insert a link to an external website
Linking to an external website is very similar to linking to an intranet page.
- Click the Edit icon in the page header to go into edit mode.
- Use your cursor to highlight the text you want to make into a link. Or just set your cursor where you want to insert the link.
- Click the Insert link button to bring up the link pop-up.
- In the link pop-up, paste the URL of the external website and click Apply.
Change the link text
Change the text displayed for a link by clicking on the link in edit mode and clicking the edit icon that appears beside it. In the Link manager, the Link Label box at the bottom contains the text that will display for the link. Click in the Link Label box and type new text to add or change the link label. Click Update.
Display external website with intranet header
When you click on a link to an external website on the intranet, by default you will navigate away from the intranet and see the external website. However, there is an option in the link manager to display the external website as though it is within the intranet. You see the external website, but the intranet's app toolbar, intranet logo, main navigation, and search options still appear at the top. This makes it easy to navigate back to pages in your intranet after visiting an external website.
To change this option:
- When creating a link, click More link options at the bottom of the link pop-up to go to the Link manager. In the Link manager, under the External location tab, select the checkbox Show external location with [Intranet name] navigation. Click Insert.
- For an existing link, click on the link in the Rich Text Editor and click the edit icon to open the Link Manager. Under the External location tab, select the checkbox Show external location with [Intranet name] navigation. Click Update.
Some websites block this feature, and will not display within the navigation. If you leave the box unchecked, when the link is clicked, the browser leaves the intranet site and displays only the external website.
